Listen as Justin Feldman, a BBA sophomore, talks about what, in his mind, makes a leader good.
Below you'll find the complete transcript of Ashley's audio reflection:
makes a good leader? This is the question that I have wrestled with throughout
this entire Ross Leadership Initiative x process. Respect? Dedication? Courage?
Ambition? Which traits are truly the most indicative of a good leader? However,
after weeks and weeks of reflection on this question, I found that all great
leaders share one trait. Passion. Passion is the catalyst that leads to all
other traits that shape a good leader.
An individual, who is passionate about what they are leading, will never cease to have motivation about his leadership role. The desire to lead must come from within. If you have a passion for something, motivation to lead will come naturally due to a genuine interest in the topic. Thus, you will never have to question why you are leading this particular group.
Different people have distinctive leadership styles. Some leaders are very vocal, while others prefer to lead by example. Some lead through emotion, while others prefer to lead based on their experiences. Additionally, certain people even have varying leadership styles based on the situation.
Whether you are the CEO of a major corporation, President of a school organization, or captain of a high school sports team, each of these positions were acquired first and foremost due to passion for the subject. The people that you lead witness the passion you display in relation to your goal, which in turn will cause them to follow your example and obtain a greater motivation. Dedication will come easy with passion, because you will enjoy the work that you do and therefore have no issue putting in the necessary effort. Ambition will also follow because what someone is passionate about will always be on their mind, giving them ample opportunity to seek ways to improve it.
A crucial trait to get others to follow your lead is earning their respect. Without the respect of your peers, your attempt to lead will be unsuccessful. This is because others must respect you in order to take your advice and follow your lead. One of the easiest ways to earn respect in an area is to show your genuine passion for it. Others will be quick to follow due to being able to observe that you are truly invested in and sincerely care about what you are leading.
Attempting to lead in an area that you are not passionate about is nearly impossible. When you do not have passion for something, it increases the likelihood that you will not go above and beyond in that endeavor, but merely go through the motions. This, unfortunately, can cause your true strengths and qualities to not shine through in relation to your leadership. I truly believe that everyone has the ability to be an excellent leader, however it takes something that someone is genuinely passionate about to unleash this potential. So when deciding how to improve to become the best leader possible, take a step back and start with focusing on an area that you are passionate about.
